How safe is pineapple in pregnancy?

Craving pineapple? Wondering if it’s safe to eat pineapple in pregnancy?

Well, the answer is not too simple… it’s a Yes and it’s also a No!

Pineapple is one such fruit which has always gathered mixed opinions on whether it’s safe to eat in pregnancy or not.

Without a doubt, pineapple is packed with nutrients. It’s a rich source of vitamin C, contains manganese in abundance which is great for your bones, contains vitamin B1 and B6 and is full of dietary fiber to keep your digestive system active during pregnancy.

Then, why the big question – is pineapple safe or unsafe in pregnancy?

Pineapple contains an enzyme called bromelain. It is this bromelain which is considered to cause a miscarriage in pregnant women.

However, many say it depends on the quantity of pineapple you eat. Only when pineapple is eaten in large quantities, the effect of bromelain kicks in and it may cause a miscarriage. Some believe, eating one to two cups of pineapple a week is safe and may not harm the pregnancy or the baby.

So, mixed opinions on pineapple there.

Pregnancy is a time when you need to be really watchful of what you can eat and what could be potentially harmful for the new life budding inside you. I personally, avoided pineapple when I was pregnant. because I didn’t know how much is too much.

My suggestion… Be wise, eat right! Avoid, when in doubt. (or best, consult your gynaecologist)

Like pineapple, Papaya is also one such fruit which has been debated if safe or not in pregnancy. Read my post on Papaya – Why is it the ‘forbidden’ fruit during pregnancy? to find out.
