Tips for Travelling with Baby and List of Things to Pack

Planning a trip with your little one? I am not surprised if you are anxious on how it’s all going to go.

Well, the answer is – “IT WILL BE A WHOLE LOT OF FUN!!” – if you plan well 🙂

A few useful Tips to begin with…

– Rule No.1 – Carry everything. Don’t leave anything to chance thinking you won’t need it. Trust me – you will!

– Next, Make a list of things you will need to carry (Take a print out of the list. It’ll be easy to keep a track of things you need to buy before the trip, things to prepare and pack)

– Plan and Prepare in advance – start putting away the things you will be carrying in a suitcase at least a few days before your travel date

– Invest in a good quality Diaper Bag with ample space and compartments/ pockets

– Make sure you have your pediatrician’s phone number handy

– Remember to carry lots of wipes, tissues and disposal bags

List of things to pack

Here’s a not so short list of all the things you will need to carry for your little traveler.

#1. In your Diaper Bag

  • Diapers (Carry at least 3-4 or even more depending on the travel time)
  • Changing pad
  • Wipes
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Diaper rash cream
  • Plastic bags
  • Old newspapers
  • Baby Blanket and a large shawl
  • Mosquito/ Insect repellent (You can try Good Knight Fabric Roll-On Personal Mosquito Repellent, works for my baby – small and compact to carry and use)
  • Feeding Bottles
  • Formula
  • Water flask/ thermos
  • Bibs
  • Burp Cloths (Suggest getting a waterproof bib which can be easily wiped off and cleaned)
  • Cerelac or Baby Cereal
  • Spoons
  • Small Bowl
  • Tissues
  • Extra set of clothes
  • Light jacket (It sometimes gets really chilly on flights or AC trains)
  • Umbrella

#2. Feeding

  • Feeding Bottles (Carry at least 6 if not more)
  • Formula (Enough to last you through the entire trip – please carry a little extra! I was totally paranoid about this one :p)
  • Water flask
  • Bibs â€“ disposable bibs or plastic bib
  • Biscuits or similar finger food if your baby has been introduced to solids
  • Cerelac and baby food jars
  • Bottle Washing liquid kit (Liquid and bottle brush)
  • Compact bottle sterilizer
  • Breast Pump if you are breast feeding

#3. Bathing Supplies

  • Baby’s soap, shampoo, both massage and hair oil, powder, baby lotion, baby cream, sunscreen lotion (Carry travel size packs)
  • 2 bath towels
  • Diapers (Carry enough and even extra for the entire duration of vacation. The last thing you want to do is hunt for the right size and brand of diaper while on your holiday)

#3. First-Aid

  • Medicines for fever, loose motions/ constipation, colic, cough and cold (And if there are any other regular medicines your little one takes)
  • Vitamins
  • Digital Thermometer
  • Calamine lotion to soothe insect bites (I use DermoCalm for my little one)
  • Nail clippers
  • Antiseptic solution or Dettol, cotton and bandage

#4. Clothes & Toys

  • Pack enough clothes – At least 2-3 pairs per day
  • Light jacket
  • Socks
  • Shoes and Flip flops
  • Cap
  • Favourite Toys (Small toys that can be easily carried keeping in mind the weight restrictions in flights. My son loves playing with regular katori-chammmach or other regular items like pen, keychain etc.)
  • Books

#5. Baby Gear

  • Front carrier or sling (I swear by it – this is really useful when your baby is less than a year old)
  • Lightweight Collapsible stroller (Make sure it meets the flight restrictions – Check the airlines website for details)
  • Car seat (This is optional. May come in handy if it’s a road trip

Be prepared!

Last of all – Be well prepared for catastrophes like leaky diapers, spit-ups and/ or a continuously crying baby. If you are someone who is easily embarrassed – toughen up! 🙂

So far, I have been on 4 trips with my son (First when he was 4 months old) and this list has helped me sail through smoothly.

    1. Hey Shehzeen. Thanks for visiting my blog. Yes! Our first trip with Kabir was to Darjeeling Hills when he was only 5 months old and it was a very smooth one. Hills are usually not a problem with babies/ kids. How old is your child? Suggest you carry sick bags or plastic bags just in case. I also carry Domstal (for nausea or vomiting). Consult your pediatrician. Let me know if you have anymore questions.
